The Sea-Dweller is a Submariner that got serious. It is thicker, heavier, rated far deeper, and it carries a helium escape valve the Submariner does not have. Those differences are exactly what a weak clone smooths away, because thickness costs steel and the valve costs a machining step. Thickness is the first tell
A Sea-Dweller that looks svelte is wrong. The genuine 126600 is noticeably taller than a Submariner, and the Deepsea is taller still because of its Ringlock case, which uses a nitrogen-alloy steel compression ring to carry the pressure load. Ask for a side-on QC photo against a ruler. A clone built on a Submariner case to save cost will read close to Submariner height, and once you have seen the two side by side you cannot unsee it.
The helium escape valve should be a real valve
At 9 o’clock the Sea-Dweller carries a one-way valve that vents helium during saturation diving decompression. On a good clone it is a machined assembly seated into a drilled port, with a clean knurled edge and an even gap around it. On a poor one it is a dummy: a disc glued into a blind recess. The tell is the seam. A real valve sits in a bore with a consistent line all the way round, and a fake one usually shows a slightly oval or off-centre join.
Sea-Dweller or Deepsea
They are not the same watch. The Sea-Dweller 126600 is 43mm, rated to 1,220 metres, and since 2017 it carries a cyclops over the date, which earlier Sea-Dwellers famously did not. The Deepsea is bigger again at 44mm, rated to 3,900 metres, and wears like a genuine tool instrument rather than a dress diver. If you want a watch you can wear daily, the Sea-Dweller is the sane choice. If you want the presence, the Deepsea is the one.
