The Speedmaster is the one chronograph where the movement is visible from the wrong side. It is hand-wound, so there is no rotor hiding the bridges, and the sapphire-back editions put the whole thing on display. Read the tachymeter scale first

The bezel carries the fastest-to-check detail on the watch. Collectors argue about the “dot over ninety” and the shape of the 200 marker because those tiny variations identify genuine production eras, and a factory that gets the numeral spacing right has usually got the rest right too. Look at where the scale crowds near 400 and above. On a good clone the numbers tighten smoothly. On a weak one they bunch unevenly, because the artwork was traced rather than drawn.

Subdial geometry

The Speedmaster has three registers, and their spacing is unforgiving because the dial is symmetrical and your eye checks it automatically. In QC photos, look at the gap between each subdial and the dial edge, and at whether the printed rings are perfectly circular rather than faintly egg-shaped. Then check the hands actually reset to zero. A chronograph hand parked one or two ticks off zero is a common flaw and it is visible in every photo you will ever take of the watch.

The Snoopy editions are a different job

Omega’s Silver Snoopy Award pieces carry printed caseback artwork and, on the 2020 edition, an animated caseback disc. That artwork is a print quality test rather than a machining test, so the failure mode changes: instead of soft edges on metal you get muddy colour and lost line detail. Ask for a high-resolution caseback shot specifically. It is the whole reason to buy that reference.

Hesalite or sapphire

The genuine Moonwatch has shipped both ways. Hesalite is the flight-qualified original, domed acrylic that scratches easily and polishes out with a fingertip. Sapphire is the display version, flatter and harder, and it is the one paired with the exhibition caseback. Neither is more authentic than the other. Sapphire shows the movement, which on a super clone is a feature worth having.
