Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Replica

The Offshore was Audemars Piguet’s answer to a complaint that the Royal Oak had gone soft. It took the same octagonal language and made everything bigger: a thicker case, protected pushers, a coarser dial grid, and rubber where there had been steel. Purists hated it in 1993 and it outsold the original anyway. This collection holds 34 pieces from $1,050.

Mega Tapisserie is a coarser grid, not a lazier one

The Offshore uses a larger-squared version of the Royal Oak’s dial pattern, which sounds easier to reproduce and is not. Bigger squares mean any irregularity is bigger too, so a wobble in the grid that would hide on a standard Royal Oak dial is plainly visible here. Check that the rows stay parallel across the full dial, especially where the grid runs past the subdials, because that is where cheap tooling drifts.

The pushers should feel engineered

Offshore chronograph pushers sit inside protective guards and are usually capped in rubber or ceramic. There are three separate parts meeting at each pusher, and the gaps between them are the tell. On a good clone the cap sits centred in its guard with an even ring of clearance all the way round. On a poor one it sits slightly proud or off-centre, and the guard looks like a decoration rather than protection. Ask for a top-down photo of the right-hand case side.

Size is the point, and also the risk

The Offshore runs 42mm to 44mm and is genuinely thick, because the chronograph and the protective architecture both add height. This is not a watch that hides under a shirt cuff and it is not meant to. If you have not worn a watch this size before, the thickness will surprise you more than the diameter does.

Which strap

The Offshore has shipped on rubber, leather and steel, and the character changes completely between them. Rubber is the original intent and the most wearable. Steel makes it heavier again, which some people want. Judge the strap-to-case fit in photos: the Offshore’s lugs are wide and a strap that leaves a visible gap at the join is a common shortcut.
