Gerald Genta drew the Royal Oak in a single night in 1971, and every difficult thing about cloning it comes from that drawing. An octagonal bezel held by eight visible screws, a dial cut with a tapisserie grid, and a bracelet that grows out of the case instead of hanging off it. The eight screws should all point the same way
On a genuine Royal Oak the hexagonal bezel screws are aligned, because they are fitted from the back with threaded bars and set deliberately. It is a detail Audemars Piguet takes seriously and it is the fastest thing to check in a QC photo. Look straight down at the bezel and read the screw heads as a set. If they sit at random angles, the factory drove them in from the front and stopped when they were tight, which tells you what the rest of the assembly is like.
Tapisserie depth separates the tiers
The dial pattern is a grid of tiny raised squares, cut on a rose engine on the genuine article. Depth is what makes it come alive: light has to fall into the channels and leave the square tops bright, so the dial shifts as your wrist moves. A cheap clone prints or lightly stamps the grid, and the result is flat, uniform and dead under any light. In photos, ask for the dial shot at an angle rather than straight on. Straight-on lighting hides a shallow pattern, and a raking angle exposes it instantly.
Where the bracelet meets the case
The integrated bracelet is the reference’s signature and its hardest manufacturing problem. The links have to taper steadily and the transition at the case has to look like one continuous object rather than two parts introduced to each other. Check the gap at the join and the alignment of the brushed and polished surfaces as they cross from case to bracelet. Polished bevels should line up across that seam. When a factory misses here, the watch looks assembled rather than made.
Jumbo Extra-Thin or 41mm
The Jumbo Extra-Thin is the purist’s reference, 39mm and genuinely slim, closest in proportion to the 1972 original. The 41mm is the modern volume seller and wears considerably larger. Thinness is expensive to reproduce, so an Extra-Thin that is not actually thin has missed the only reason to choose it. Measure it in the QC photos.
