The wave dial is the checkpoint

Since 2018 the Diver 300M has carried a laser-engraved wave pattern cut into ceramic, not printed on metal. That change matters for buyers, because printing a wave is easy and cutting one is not. On a good clone the waves have physical depth and the dial changes character as it moves through light, going from near-flat to strongly rippled. On a weak one the pattern sits dead under the glass at every angle. Ask for two dial photos taken at different angles and compare them. If they look identical, the pattern is printed.

Skeleton hands and the date window

The Diver 300M uses skeletonised hands, which sound like a small detail and are not. The open sections have to be cut cleanly and filled evenly with lume, and cheap factories either leave ragged edges or overfill so the lume bulges past the frame. Look at the minute hand against a light dial. You should see a crisp outline and a flat lume surface. Then check the date window at 6 o’clock for even framing on all four sides.

Diver 300M or Planet Ocean

They are different watches for different wrists. The Diver 300M is the slimmer dress-diver, 42mm and comfortable under a cuff. The Planet Ocean is the bigger, more technical piece, rated deeper and visibly chunkier, with a broader bezel and more presence. If you want the Bond association, it is the Diver 300M. If you want the watch that looks like it does a job, it is the Planet Ocean.

Bracelet and clasp

Omega’s diver clasps carry a ratcheting extension, and this is a moving mechanism rather than a stamped shape, so it is a genuine test of the factory. In QC photos, ask for the clasp open. The ratchet teeth should be evenly cut and the extension should sit flush when closed. A clasp that needs force to close, or that shows a step where it meets the bracelet, is the most common Seamaster flaw.
